This is a train from the 1970s and so is the sleeping accommodation. It is clean, nicely set out but spartan. The sound of the train running over the rails and the rocking does not make for a great night’s sleep. But if you are interested in experiences then we would highly recommend the journey. We went overnight both ways which meant we lost no time..another advantage. You can get fruit and other basic amenities but we did not need to do so. Water and basic toiletries are supplied. The staff are incredibly helpful and ensure no problems. The train is also exceptionally punctual. So have expeience and take the train. We would do it again.

We booked a private cabin for 2 (payed for 4) so we had a bit more comfort. The bed was spotless clean, water and small snacks were provided. I was a great experience travelling through the night through North Vietnam…

We travelled to Sapa and back on the King Express train and loved it….. a great adventure, the cabins were comfortable (we did select the private cabin for two), the toilets were clean and the staff were friendly…..
we enjoyed drinking a few glasses of wine while looking out of the window, it was bumpy and rough at time but that just added to the experience. We were able to sleep for a few hours and arrived refreshed at Sapa..
Well worth doing just for the adventure of it, don’t expect a smooth ride but expect a ride you will remember and will add some fun to your travels.
